For eight years, Riri has been an orphan. She
has lived in the orphanage (or,
orphan home) for six years. She has lived
there because she has no relative to
take care of her. Her grandparents have died.
Her only relative is an uncle from
her mother’s side. He is a scravenger, and his
house is very small. He has ve
children. He has put her in the orphanage
(or, orphan home) because he wants
her to get better care and to go to a good
school. We know that her uncle and
his family love her because they have
visited her routinely once a month (or,
a lot of time). Riri is very caring. She is an active member of the charity group
of the orphanage founded early last year. She has
participated very actively
in the group’s activities. She and the other
members of the group have made
handycrafts and sold them. The charity group have done one thing
for street
children. On the orphanage’s 15th birthday,
they gave each child twenty
thousand rupiahs. They also have done one
thing for poor families. Early this
month they gave each family a gift containing sugar, cooking oil,
and rice.

Beni: That sounds a good idea. I have never

Siti’s
explanation
People can separate the wet waste from the dry
waste because every
house has two small rubbish bins, one for the
wet waste, and one
for the dry waste. The rubbish bins in every
house are never smelly
because some rubbish men come to collect the
rubbish every two
days. There are many rubbish bins around the
town so people do not
litter.
Udin’s explanation
The government has xed the €oors and the
pavements of the big
market, so It is clean and tidy now. The
toiltes do not smell and there’s
a lot of water there, because some people celan
them regularly. The
shops look new and shiny because the owners of
the shops have
painted them.
Beni’s explanation
The rivers and ditches in the town are cleaned regularly so there
isn’t much rubbish in them. The streets and pavements in the
neighbourhood are clean because every family sweep the area
in front of and around their houses every day. The ditches in the
neighbourhood are clean because every family cleans the ditches
near their houses regularly.
Lina’s explanation
There are parks and
playgrounds around the town, so many children
play there every afternoon
with their families. Many people enjoy
their weekend riding on their
bicycles because there is a bicycle path
along the sides of the big river.

Fable
A Fox and A Cat
One day a cat and a fox were having a conversation. The fox, who
was a conceited creature, boasted how clever she was. 'Why, I know at least a
hundred tricks to get away from our mutual enemies, the dogs,' she said.“ I
know only one trick to get away from dogs, ” said the cat. “ You should teach
me some of yours! ““ Well, maybe some day, when I have the time, I may teach
you a few of the simpler ones,” replied the fox airily.Just then they heard the
barking of a pack of dogs in the distance. The barking grew louder and louder,
the dogs were coming in their direction.
At once the cat ran to the nearest tree and climbed into its branches,
well out of reach of any dog. “ This is the trick I told you about, the only
one I know, “ said the cat. “ Which one of your hundred tricks are you going to
use? “The fox sat silently under the tree, wondering which trick she should
use. Before she could make up her mind, the dogs arrived. They fell upon the
fox and tore her to pieces.

The Boy Who Cried Wolf
Once there was a shepherd boy who had to look after a flock of sheep. One
day, he felt bored and decided to play a trick on the villagers. He shouted,
“Help! Wolf! Wolf!”
The
villagers heard his cries and rushed out of the village to help the shepherd
boy. When they reached him, they asked, “Where is the wolf?” The shepherd boy
laughed loudly, “Ha, Ha, Ha! I fooled all of you. I was only playing a trick on
you.”A few days later, the shepherd boy played
this trick again. Again
he cried, “Help! Help! Wolf! Wolf!” Again, the villagers rushed up the hill to
help him and again they found that boy had tricked them. They were very angry
with him for being so naughty. Then, some time later, a wolf went into the
field. The wolf attacked one sheep, and then another and another. The shepherd
boy ran towards the village shouting, “Help! Help! Wolf! Help! Somebody!”The villagers heard his cries but they laughed because they
thought it was another trick. The boy ran to the nearest villager and said, “A
wolf is attacking the sheep. I lied before, but this time it is true!”Finally, the villagers went to look. It was true. They
could see the wolf running away and many dead sheep lying on the grass.

woods. This time, her daughter wanted to go with her too. She wanted to buy new
clothes. The old widow was happy to see her own daughter went with her together
to the market. The old widow also planned to use the money she got from selling
the wood to buy new clothes for her daughter. She was truly wanted to see her
daughter happy. The market was so far from their house. They should walk down
the hill and pass a village. The girl wore nice clothes and dress up so the
people who saw her will be admiring her beauty. In contrary, her mother wore
dirty clothes with a basket full of dry wood on her back. She wanted that her
mother to walk behind her so that people would think that she was not her
mother. The girl cannot accept if people in the village know that the old widow
was her mother. Indeed, none know that the girl and the old widow were mother
and daughter because they lived alone on the top of hill. When they began to
enter the village, all the people who passed by were looking at them. They were
so fascinated by the beauty of the girl. They could not resist to look at her
beautiful face. However, when people saw an old lady who walked behind her, it

was. Among those who saw it, a young man approached and asked her, "Hey,
pretty girl. Is that your mother behind you? " "No," the girl said arrogantly.
"She is my servant!" The old
lady could understand why her own daughter said so. She only blamed herself
that she could not be the mother that her daughter wanted. The old lady only
kept silent and continued the journey. Not far away from there, a young man
approached again and asked the girl the same question. "Hi sweetheart. Is
it your mother who walks behind you? "Again the girl rejected the fact by
saying no the old widow was her mother. "No, no, she is not my
mother," said the girl. "She is my slave!"The same questions
continued repeatedly several times. And the girl always answered the questions
by telling that the old widow was not her mother. The first, second, and the
third ones, the old widow could accept it. However when it went along several
times, it made the old widow sad. It hurt the old lady so much that her own
daughter did not admit that she was her mother. The silent turned to sadness.
The sadness turned to madness. And when a mother was mad, a bad thing would
follow. Finally, the poor old widow cannot resist anymore. The old widow prayed
to the God to punish her rebellious daughter. "Oh my God, I was not able
to resist this insult. How come my own daughter treat her own mother like this.
Yes, God punish this rebellious child! Punish her.... " On the power of
God Almighty, slowly her body was turned to stone. The change starts from the
feet. When the change has reached half of the body, the girl was crying asking
forgiveness to her mother.

Please forgive your daughter, your only daughter," cry the girl. The girl continued to wail and cry pleading with his mother. However, everything was too late. School
A
school is a place where students go to learn. Today, children in
most
countries must go to school for a number of years. Teachers
help
them to learn. A school is headed by a pterperincipal, or a
headmaster.
At school students can learn skills and knowledge
that
are useful for the life now and in the future. In most countries
students
learn basic subjects—science, music, geography,
history,
and languages. They also learn extracurricular activities.
In
Indonesia, religion is a compulsory subject. With their teachers
and
their friends, students also learn to be good people who can
di!erentiate
between right and wrong, between acceptable and
unacceptable
behaviour.
